The error message I am getting on the diff archive is:

gzip: stdin: unexpected end of file
/bin/gtar: Unexpected EOF in archive
/bin/gtar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

The full backup gives:

gzip: stdin: unexpected end of file
/bin/gtar: Unexpected EOF in archive
/bin/gtar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

I've rebuilt the drive and moved on, so it's no longer a critical
question.  Thanks for your interest.
