numix team mailing list archive

Ok, folks, let us kick start the development!

CAUTION: You have to use the "Reply to all" button when it comes to
responding to this emails so everyone will be able to read them.

All right-y, it is time to get that development started. In case you don't
know me, my name is Georgi Karavasilev (don't try to pronounce it the
Slavonic way, unless you're a natural speaker, you will fail) and amongst
the other stuff I've done in open source software ville, I happen to be one
of the lads in Numix project and I will be your SABDFL when it comes to
development of desktop shell and the OS. I live in the Balkans, even better
- I live in the utmost South-Eastern European country, whose territory is
entirely in Europe. I am slightly crazy (in a good-ish-esque way), so
weirdness is to be expected.

Now, lemme clear some stuff:

If you want any money for your development work, we are willing to pay you.
The amount of money will represent the amount of work you've done. We don't
know yet how much we can pay you for now, but hopefully it won't be super
tiny amount.

The current focus of the development is the desktop shell.

We have not settled for a base distro for the OS yet.

Everyone of you will get the entire package of Numix artwork for free.

We have not decided on OS and DS name for now.

Now, as you know yesterday I asked you for your GitHub names and the reason
why I needed them was to create this this GitHub team -
https://github.com/orgs/numixproject/teams/developers
If you wanna help with the development and you're not in it, shoot me your
GH username and I shall add you to it.

Now, off we go to the real part. As started a few lines above, the current
focus of the development is the desktop shell. As you know from this post
https://plus.google.com/b/115833527622591803679/115833527622591803679/posts/fgo3cAikTM9it
is to be made from Gnome-Shell extensions (which means not forking
anything) and the design specifications of the environment are in the post,
so be sure to read them. If you have any questions about them, ask me.

The GH team ha admin rights, so you can create repositories. Now, I am a
designer and I can not tell you how you want to write the extensions. You
may want one extension for the dash rearranging, one for the notifications
and the notiications centre and etc ... , you may want to take the one
extension to rule them all approach or you may take a different from these
two approaches approach, that is up to you, guys. You will have to
collaborate and select the easiest way for you to code the desktop shell.

If you want to instant communication we have an IRC channel - #numix on
freenode. Otherwise use this mailing list for talking.

So, to sum it up, organise your repos and way of labour and commence
developing the desktop shell. If you have any questions do not hesitate to
ask here or on IRC.
