This seems to be a general problem. What I have found useful so far are the
the libraries references:

  * Clutter <https://developer.gnome.org/clutter/stable/>
  * Shell toolkit <https://developer.gnome.org/st/stable/>
  * Shell itself <https://developer.gnome.org/shell/stable/>
  * Tweener <http://hosted.zeh.com.br/tweener/docs/en-us/>

Also this guide (although out dated) provides some hints on how some things
work: Shell Step by
step<https://wiki.gnome.org/Projects/GnomeShell/Extensions/StepByStepTutorial>

I case you really don't find anything to guide you, look at shell source
code. You can check it out on the git <http://git.gnome.org> tree. I would
recommend looking at the 3.10 or 3.12 branch.
