Jimmy Yuen Ho Wong confirmed that the question is solved:
There's no errors in the *Messages* buffer. I just did c-x c-f to open
the file in CarbonEmacs. I think this is just CarbonEmacs's weirdness.
Vanilla Emacs in the terminal is fine.
