Re: Planning and finite capacity in manufacturing - Odoo

Hi, we are being consulted on the same subject.
So far, standard Odoo MRP is quite weak in this aspect and not
reality-ready for many manufacturing companies.

Talking with both companies and University proffessors, and with experience
from previous jobs in industry, we are in the process of detecting actual
needs (in the long run).

Yet to do a complete deep analysis, I summarize here just some points we
were told or thought about:
- One of the things is, precisely the need to plan with a given finite
capacity...
- but also to simulate different plannings according to different
parameters, such as:
  _- fastest route,
_- cheapest route (operator cost, extra hours cost, machine consumption),
_- balance load among different machines or try to avoid starting a
machine,
_- balance (or maximize or minimize) machine total working hours
(depending on each machine policy),
_- optimize electric consumption if more than one machine can produce a
piece but have different power consumption,...) and then choose one,
discard the rest.
- take into account calendar availability (scheduled maintenance work,
weekends, each worker vacations or other duties, official holidays (levels:
country, state, city, company),...),
- be able to tweak the calculated planning (here would help a complete
Gantt chart, not the existing limited one),
- be able to deal with the fact that sometimes 1 operator can operate more
than one machine simultaneously,
- be able to recompute just the remaining part of a planning if some
changes happen (machine breaks, for example)
- be able to relate each worker to different machines he/she can operate,
- parametric bill of materials: kind of template bill of materials, with
some parameters in parents that change their children values and so on
(super useful also for quotations of complex products which vary in some
parametes (think x, y, z, rounding radius, surface polishing level,...)),
- ...

Were also asked about the posibility to export/import data to/from Arena,
Simio or others.
As we see, manufacturing is a very complex world and there is a lot of work
to be done, but a lot can be achieved.
