FWIW, you need to install few header files before running "python setup.py install".
This might be the reason for your failure.

On my debian box, I had to install these ones:

$ aptitude install libxml2-dev libxslt1-dev libpq-dev libldap2-dev
libsasl2-dev libyaml-dev

  v6.1 server install tries to install broken python-ldap

Status in OpenERP Server:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  downloaded 6.1 stable and decided to python setup.py install

  apparently 6.1 decided to added python-ldap to required modules list (why?)
  because first and forall ldap must remain optional

  secondly because the install is buggy and does not work:
