I have checked your issue and faced the same problem. I think Expectation of "message" not valid But total should be there.
That decision will taken by RD team.

  TypeError: 'int' object is not iterable

  Doing the same in the GTK client results in '0' balances.

  I'd expect either a message that similar periods cannot be selected OR
  the totals for the selected period.

  Running 6.1.1 locally on Win 7 with only OpenErp applications.
