I think you are wrong.

"count" mode in search() should return a reliable count of the items. So, 
going all through the expensive calculation of ids makes sense.

Your patch returns the wrong kind of result. Count is supposed to always 
return a number, not a list or so.

  So I propose to move up : 
  if count:
      return ids
  As I submit in the attachement of the bug
