I have tested your scenario, I have faced the same problem and at my end
The leads in Chinese characters appear as encoded char. That's why I
have attached the screenshort for reference.

  [trunk/6.1] Thunderbird plugin do not recognize Chinese characters

Status in OpenERP Addons (modules):
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  How to reproduce it in 6.1:
  - Create a lead in OpenERP using Chinese characters (probably any UTF-8 would provoke the same issue)
  - install TB plugin in TB.
  - Open an email and click OpenERP/Document/Push a document

  Search for the list of leads.

  The leads in Chinese characters appear as blank lines in the screen
  (check screenshot)

  Leads and Chinese characters are perfectly displayed in OpenERP
  otherwise.
