We are talking about usability - this is not given if employees can't be sorted correctly. 
in my 30 years experience I never had the request to sort by first name

of course the name can be entered as <last name> <first name> in the
same field

nevertheless
* polite postal address wording would be <first name> <last name>
* internal sorting will always be  <last name> <first name>

  name / first name
