Never mind, I found the problem.  The openjdk package was trying to add
jar as a master alternative, but I had already set up the jar from
Oracle's jdk as a slave to java.  Everything works fine now.

  I downloaded and manually installed Oracle's latest JDK (version 7)
  before attempting to install grails.  I also manually created a java
  config with update-alternatives for my Oracle JDK.  Dunno if that
  might have something to do with the problem.
