Don't change them to space. There should be no line-break. A common space would allow a line-break.
There we should use either no space, the used "NO-BREAK SPACE" (\u00A0) or the "NARROW NO-BREAK SPACE" (\u202F). I would prefer the last one. But I don't know, how this will look in Chinese texts.
