Jeremy, I received some more answers this morning after our discussion
last night. The high RAM usage is due to how OpenLP displays PowerPoint
and Impress slides. I must use either PowerPoint or Impress, then it
displays an "image" of the slide. This will result in some pretty high
RAM usage. 1.7 GB does however seem pretty high, how much memory are you
using when you simply run PowerPoint? I am wondering if their could be
an issue with PowerPoint itself? I am also sure someone much smarter
than me will comment on this bug also :)

  On some PP presentations, previewing gets up to 900 Meg of ram usage,
  then going live it climbs to 1.7 Gig of ram usage and crashes.
