This may be unrelated but I had issues using 10.04 with certain file
types also. When I went to 10.10 this didn't happen any more. I
suspected due to a newer version of the gstreamer plugins.

Bug description:
  Using the Lucid ppa builds beginning at 1419 give an "Unsupported
  File" error when trying to play (preview or live) a video with the
  following extensions: mp4, ogg, and avi.  The following extension
  work: mov & mpg.
