While I agree with your sentiments and I like this solution in particular, I am looking at things from a "big picture" perspective, and I find this completely unnecessary.

To be brutally honest, I'd prefer you working on more important matters. We have other parts of the code that are far slower and far more complicated that could be worked on. This work that you have done is not going to make the rendering of slides any faster, nor is it going to make videos work properly, for example.

I appreciate that you'd like to help us out, and I certainly appreciate your Python expertise, but I'd also appreciate it if you'd be able to work with us on sections of the code that need a little more love and attention right now. Once we're into RC phase, I'd love to do some of this Python optimisation!
