I can reproduce this problem with the following Operating Systems:
- Ubuntu Oneiric
- WindowsXP Professional

Regarding other OS'es I cant give any informations.

Regarding the background problem I think this should be the same problem here.
But in my opinion it should occour very rarely, because it should only occour in case you take the photo whild camera has a vertical orientation, but because the most screens are horizontal it should not be the typical scenario. Additionally the most other image viewers automatically recognize the image orientation, this would mean there is anybody outside how only view the image with openlp?

Bug description:
  Images with another orientation (saved in exif datas) are not shown in with the right orientation.
  This is a bug of QWebkit. (https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19688)
  In the little preview in the Media Manager the image is shown correctly.
