This is further investigation into this.

Using 10.6 mac
Using OpenLP 1.9.10 build bzr2037 which seems to work a little better ( has vlc as an option )

Researching this, the vlc version is of the 3 possible versions
I ran another project to see the errors, and it seemed like the universal actually works the best, or in theory should work the best, but never got that project to work. Strongly think this is due to the wrong architecture. ( 64 or 32 bit, intel or power pc, seems like it's mach ). However end users can have any of these, but the vlc project says their ctypes can deal with any of these.

vlc-2.0.3 univ.dmg

These install into the applications folder, and it references the following files
/applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/lib/libvlc.dylib
    ( note this also has a libvlc.5.dylib and a libvlc.2.dylib depending on version)
/applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/plugins/
/applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/plugins/plugin.dat

Preview window video, using mp4 and mov file which are known to work, will focus on mp4 file here
Set "Use Player:" to ( note the menu is far too small to read, needs to be 4 times as wide )

Also found this in the dialog ( opening live view, was not able to recreate it in the limited testing here )

  video playback not working on OSX

Status in OpenLP - Worship Presentation Software:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Video playback does not work on Mac OS X (tested on Lion). The video
  does not even come up.

  I think we need to test properly the code from media rewrite branch
  and port it for Mac OS X.
