If you use letters as suggested, you would first need to:

Search for the passage
Preiview it
Count the punctuation
Work out what letter that is
Search again
Finally preview to check that you have it right

Instead how about  having an edit dialogue? It might work in one of
these ways:

Search for the passage
Preview it
Click edit on preview controller tool bar.
Select the part you want / or delete the part you dont want
Save

- Or -

Search for the passage
Add it to service
Right click -> Edit
Select the part you want / or delete the part you dont want
Save

I think this would work better as (in my unorganised church when the
paster is shouting up to the balcony) I can see the pastor saying "I
want John 3:29 up until He must become greater;"

You could also use the edit function at a later date if required.

  Support partial verses in Bible advanced search

Bug description:
  Occasionally Bible passages can start or end part way through the
  verse. Currently it isn't possible to specify this when searching for
  Scripture.

  Therefore I propose adding a new feature to the 'Advanced' Bible search. If the user specifies a letter after the Verse number, then that letter will indicate how many verse separators in (fullstops/semicolons/?/!/etc) to start or stop. 'a' would be the first, 'b' the second etc.
  For 'from' verses, it would start at this point. For 'to' verses it would end at this point.

  Examples:
  John 3:29-30
  29 The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete. 30 He must become greater; I must become less.”

  John3:29a-30a
  The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete. 30 He must become greater;

  John 3:29-29a
  The bride belongs to the bridegroom.

  John 3:29a-29b
  The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice.

  John 3:29b-29
  That joy is mine, and it is now complete.
