Accept the Rimach comment but this is only part of the final solution.
  
If we do not get this in then it will become a monster and I will need to block other changes.
Andreas has a SIP migration branch which needs to go in soon to enable a migration to python3.

I plan a few more sets of clean ups which will include looking at the above comment.
