I don't think your changes is the problem. As far as I can see we also
called "media_item.clean_up_thumbnails" before your changes.

A solution could be to compare timestamps on existing thumbnails and the presentation-file and only update if the later is newer.
Regarding the update-thing, we could check if the thumbnail-path contains the filename-hash, and if not, the trigger an update as well.

  OpenLP Loops Presentations on start up

Bug description:
  I have 2 one slide presentations and on startup the md5hash routine
  runs wild.

  I have noticed a 5 sec wait in startup after the service file has
  loaded so this may be it but this does not look good.
