I agree with Julien. Your main task is about portability on newer
Ubuntu and other distributions.

Install a Ubuntu 12.04 LTS server, then follow the installation manual
(from sources). You will probably encounter some problems. Open tickets
on Launchpad for every problem, and try to solve them.
