Andy - you are looking at a finalized video which was sent just so that
you can see the problem. I upgraded melt to 0.7.2.  Problem solved,  as
best as I can tell.  I just reinstalled with sudo apt install melt.
Apparently there was 0.7.2 was a newer version that is now available.

  when zooming in, the playback is distorted.

Status in OpenShot Video Editor:
  New

Bug description:
  when zooming to say 150%, the playback is distorted.  using openshot
  1.3.1 installed from ppa and linux mint 11 - 32 bit version.  it is
  much better viewed than explained.  everything else seems to work very
  well - wonderful program other than this one thing.  see attachment.
  LIBsdl is version 1.2.so.0.  Recently I installed ffmpeg from source
  so that it will record screencapture.  Any help or ideas is greatly
