I've just noticed something further on this.

If I leave OpenShot idle, but with the playback marker on a video clip,
the CPU runs high as described above (around 68%)

If I leave the playback marker on an area where there is no video, and
no audio, CPU drops to around 8-12%

Yet in either case I would expect it to be doing nothing ...
