I had the same problem and sdl_preview fixed it. ( Ubuntu 12.04,
Openshot 1.4.3).

Would it be better to have sdl_preview as the default ? It took me about
a month to find out why it kept randomly crashing. It's much better now.

Bug description:
  I've just upgraded to 1.2.2 and just launching the application, I see
  on "top" openshot using from 50% to 80% doing nothing.

  I'm using Gentoo with gtk+2.20.1-r1 (I thought it was the gtk+
  version)
