I too have this problem....

I installed using the build wizard

Linux Barolo 2.6.28-17-generic #58-Ubuntu SMP Tue Dec 1 21:27:25 UTC
2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux

DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=9.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=jaunty
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 9.04"

I checked my version of ffmpeg and found it wasn't installed ?surely the
build wizard should have got this for me?

after a: sudo apt-get install ffmpeg

I still have the same problem

                  OpenShot.deb 0.9.34
                  openshot-mlt_0.4.3-1_i386


Bug "after import a video nothing happen" Secuence a
1- open OpoenShot
2- Click + icon
3- Browse a video
4- Select a video and click Open
Nothig Happend, the video wasn't import

2- Click "Files", "Import files..."
3- Browse a video
4- Select a video and click Open
Nothig Happend, the video wasn't import

Secuences tried with different types of videos,  wmv, mpeg, avi
With Ogg Theora videos, OpenShot crash, but that's another issue
