Thanks.  Inspired by that faq, I looked into ffmpeg more closely and discovered that my issue was with it.  I also found a solution.  

For completeness I opened (and closed) a bug:

Bug description:
There is no sound when previewing a video. I didn't have the audio on the track muted, and pavucontrol showed no sound coming out of the app.
