Hi Steve,
I have tried install openstack vlan mode followed this guide:

but I still can't ping vm, did you try it already?

I have seen a few people complaining of the same problem on various openstack forums and 
bug reporting places. but as of yet nobody that has solved the problem. 
I have cleaned up everything and will try 1 more attempts at building all 
the quantum network related paths. should that still do the same thing 
I will probably go try vlan instead of gre as nobody has complained when 
using vlan.
