Stefan Rijnhart (Therp) proposed the following answer:
Hi Don,

in 6.0 the parent_id is a related field refering the head of the
employee's department. This column move preserves the original manager,
but it does indeed not process the data any further as it would not make
sense without custom code in 6.0.

Note that this change is reverted in 6.1, where the parent_id is a
many2one again.
