It seems not neccessary to compile to me?!
Preliminary (I didn't follow all the DSE steps yet) research suggests
to use a pre-built distribution in ZIP-format from egenix (I used UCS4
for Ubuntu 9.10).
It worked for MS Vista as I explained in step 4.12 of FAQ 574

This does not interfere with your system's Python environment.
