The problem is on my side. My monitoring code uses SHOW STATUS, not
SHOW GLOBAL STATUS. Our 5.X builds match 4.0 behavior -- SHOW STATUS
== SHOW GLOBAL STATUS. I can't believe MySQL switched this from 4.0 to
5.0.
