About the background color, I asked this question to Jochym in my code
review as I think it can be removed as well. As I am waiting for his
answer I didn't want to remove it yet. It is probably anticipating a not
yet existent corner case where the layer size is different from the
photo size. This might happen if Phatch supports multiple layers, but I
guess there is no need for this yet as we can't test the behaviour
anyway.

The proposed behaviour is exactly how the grid action is working now.
The background color is usefull if the images can be spaced. As that
feature is not yet exposed I agree we should remove the background color
from the UI. But I'd like to see spacing in this action soon, so I leave
the functionality in.

I disagree with the pasting as on your blog. We don't want to paste on
something or a background color here. We want to copy the pixels exactly
as they are.

Bug description:
Imtools misses functionality to handle these corner cases well. It should be implemented.
