alecwh proposed the following answer:
raymondo - Well, the only supported "modes" so far are: default, rss,
and atom. XML isn't really an option, but RSS can be used as HTML. It
acts the same way, and can be parsed easily with other programs. If
there is demand for an XML mode (not RSS or ATOM), we'll gladly add it
in future releases.

Also, please file a bug report with the issue you had about RSS
validation. It's easier to fix things that way.
