I installed jockey-gtk on a linux-rt kernel liveUSB made with the latest
(2010-01-13) -dev.iso on an nvidia machine (previous test in comment 2
might have been with linux-rt-pure kernel, not 100% sure..), and running
it from a sudo su terminal it reports the proprietary nvidia driver is
available, clicking "activate" downloads and installs the driver, tells
me I need to restart.  On next boot the proprietary nvidia driver seems
to be used indeed (much smoother gradients, faster 3d, etc)

Jockey is a useful tool for locating hardware drivers not native to the kernel. It is part of the Ubuntu live cd (under the menu entry 'Hardware Drivers.' and detects any hardware drivers not installed automatically. It accesses proprietary drivers, but I am unsure if it locates kernel drivers as well.

It is very useful, however, for locating and installing drivers for certain hardware, such as nvidia and broadcom network cards, without having to compile them manually.
