I'd like to help out with this as well.  I've got access to a recent
MacBook pro.  The last time I tried was about a month ago and I also had
issues with the initramfs.  Other than that it seems that the EFI
booting works fine as long as its on a vfat partition.  I am also trying
to figure this out with a custom debian-live build.  It would be nice to
find a general solution for booting a live-usb on Mactel, but not sure
how realistic that is.
