Hi Shavkat, Emmanuel and Python-MEEP users,

Thanks for your prompt responses. I got the impression that our dear
colleagues in UGent/Imec have deeply integrated Python-meep into the
on-developing IPKISS package. From the online IPython notebooks, however,
there is no clear examples on how to use Python-MEEP under the framework of
IPKISS.

I have experiences of using Lumerical, Crosslight and RSoft's photonic
simulation products. It seems that our friends in UGent/Imec would like to
make another commercial software for integrate circuit simulations and
designs. Based on my experiences, I feel that, to promote IPKISS as
competitive as other commercial products, there is still a long way to go
(CAD interface, quantum effects calculation and so on).

As an open-source fun, I am glad to notice that UGent/Imec have provided a
free access version of IPKISS which is an integration of some released
open-source packages, from my perspective. I personally appreciate your
generous endeavor. I don't know if the free version is functional enough to
run basic design tasks independently in a personal computer, but I would
like to take a look further.

I and many of my colleagues in the field of Quantum Information and Quantum
Control are also naively thinking of resorting to the open-source community
to integrate some well-known open-source works into an consistent
framework. This may further include quantum circuit simulations,
multi-level quantum system dynamics, quantum tomography, optimal design and
photonic integration, as well as other possible directions. We plan to only
provide interfaces to integrate all these elements based on the existed
open-source projects, and all our work will be as the same as the elements
we connect to be fully free and open-source. Initial proposals may be
discussed in our annual conference of SQuIT. The main idea is to promote
the evolution of photonic innovation and quantum information processing to
a new level by bringing in a platform that everyone can contribute to make
some toolboxes well-used and easy to use. At this moment, I don't know if
IPKISS is also aiming to collect this kind of efforts and would like to
provide a fully functional open source version to the scientific community.
If so, I and my colleagues will be glad to consider the next step to call
for more efforts to make IPKISS which has integrated Python-MEEP and other
open source tools well developped and extensible to a larger community. For
now, Python is a good interface language to realize this goal.
Commericalizing is also welcome based on open-source endeavors.
