Thank you Erik for this.

I'm just starting with XDV.  I had problems getting it to build at all
until I found another issue saying they found adding ?plone=3.3.5 to the
end of the good-py line helped, which solved it for me, and then this.
Since I am just starting, I had never seen XDV working, and I was almost
ready to give up.

This was the final piece in the jigsaw which allowed me to get XDV
working.

Just a couple of points for any other novices like me (I'm sure these
are self-evident to experts, but it slowed me down).  You'll need to add

import sys

at the top of utils.py, and the line with if url.startswith('file:///'):
should be indented to below the y of sys in if sys.platform...
