This bug has been driving me up the wall. If it doesn't get fixed, I'm
going to have to switch to a different editor. I have lost so much
information that I had tapped into unsaved files before a battery drain
or  a crash occurred, and it seems that nobody cares to fix the issue.

"Scribes" appears to be what is needed here. It isn't nearly as nice as
gedit, but at least it saves your text.
