Still have the problem in Lucid with latest updates ... see http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/cd-dvd-laufwerke-koennen-nicht-angesprochen-w/ (in German):
Can't play audio-CDs or even burn a ISO (both with Brasero and GnomeBaker) :-(
