While my patches undoubtedly improves things (and might as well be
applied since it's been accepted upstream), does this fall under the
exception in the units policy?

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UnitsPolicy talks about a backwards
compatibility exception for command-line tools, but it seems to address
only command output, not input.
