I've used Tom Jaeger's fix since Ubuntu 8.10 and it's working flawlessly.
I've Ati Mobility X1600 (OSS radeon driver in use).
And on my old computer nVDIA video card on board (and nVIDIA proprietary driver in use).

No problems at all.
