What's happening to this as it still appears to be a problem.

I am installing a clean AMDx64 10.04 Server setup and the same issue
occurs. It just locks solid, have to restart the server from another
terminal session, Ctrl C doesn't stop it.

You have to restart server and dpkg-reconfigure firebird2.1-classic to
sort out
