I have the same problem on a Lenovo U160 core i3 and also confirm that the patches which work for the X201 which has a similar problem does not work on the U160. 
I can boot lucid and maverick with the option i915.modeset=0 .
Does anyone have a workaround to make the vesa driver show the resolution 1366x768 ? I remember once there was a package called 915resolution for ubuntu 6.0 which added widescreen resolutions for the intel chip, but this package does not exist anymore.
Does anyone know if there is an older version of ubuntu which works? I have tried Karmic Koala and Jaunty Jackalope which did not seem to work for me.
