Update: managed to get my system running from a Maverick beta alternative CD dd 05 sept 2010.
Partitioning went just fine, but Grub and/or Grub installer still do very much misbehave.
Also it seems thee are disagreements between kernel, udev, dmraid and grub about the right naming of partitions on dmraid. see LP 631795 for more info.
Installing to, and booting from a dmraid set is quite broken since Lucid. Admittedly it is somewhat of a freak system (striped fakeraid and dual boot Ubuntu/ WinXP) but does not really work out of the box.

Anything I can do to give more information of test, please let me know.
