Not to derail, but I just wanted to say that the patch in comment #21
did fix all 4 machines I've tested in a ubuntu lucid environment. Thank
you!

There's a xserver package here for anyone else experiencing this on
lucid and wanting to test it. The publisher is being a little slow today
so it may not show up for a bit.
