I've been able to replicate this, so I'll take it up with the Debian
maintainer.

basically:

pull-lp-source yiff lucid
grab-attachments 560703
cd yiff-2.14.5
patch -p1 < ../yiff_2.14.5-5.1ubuntu0.10.04.1.debdiff
debuild -uc -us

Install the resultant deb.

I've already done this, you can grab it from my PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~stefanor/+archive/ppa/+packages

Note that this patch doesn't actually fix anything, it just stops the
installation from failing if the Daemon can't start.

Do you actually need yiff-server? We tend to use pulseaudio for this
kind of thing on Ubuntu these days (assuming yiff-server is what I think
it is)
