I cannot reproduce the bug in Lucid. I haven't migrated to Maverick yet,
but this bug does no more affect me.

Try $gksu 'nautilus --no-desktop' with single quotes instead of $gksu nautilus --no-desktop to prevent the unrecognized option message.
