About the screenshot attached in comment #4: inkscape normally doesn't
open fullscreen with the EPS file - the content is zoomed to fit a
smaller (default-sized?) window, see attached screenshot [1] with
current trunk.

Does it help if you toggle on the sticky zoom (upper right corner of the
canvas, or 'Inkscape Preferences > Windows > Miscellaneous: [x] Zoom
when window is resized) and reopen the EPS file in a new window?

[1] note that current trunk versions and 0.48.x set the page size to the
bbox of the imported EPS file, and no longer to the default paper size
used by Ghostscript.
