Licenses

The issue of licensing in the assistant is getting a bit complex. I'm
not personally that interested in software licensing, but I'll post here
in case someone has strong opinions about it :)

The actual program code is released under the X license (also known as
the MIT license), which basically says you can do what you like with the
code. I felt that was appropriate because the source code doesn't give
you much that you don't get just from using the program, and because I
want to make it easy for people to write programs compatible with the
assistant - for example, to take the code and reuse it in Gitso.

The images (smiley face, phone, etc.) are mostly released under the
Creative Commons attribution-sharealike license, the latest version of
which is available here: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/
Most of the images have been taken from Wikipedia, and were put under
that license by their original authors, so I can't change it. I've put
my own limited graphical work under the CC BY-SA license in an attempt
to reduce license proliferation, and as a show of good faith to the
people that made all that lovely artwork available for free.

The documentation is released under the GNU Free Documentation License
(http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/fdl.html). I personally find this license
a bit too activist for my tastes, and I'm not happy about adding a third
license to the mix. However, a quick look around suggests that using
another license could lead to GNOME integration problems, and would
generally be more trouble than it's worth.

So that's the state of licensing in the assistant right now. If you're
concerned about any of the above, or you feel less inclined to
contribute because of it, please say.
