Raman Gupta confirmed that the question is solved:
The explanation for the option should be worded to include the string
'64 bit' as a  hint to its typical usage on 64bit platforms like for
example:-

Add option --libdir=/usr/lib64 if your system is 64bit and it installs
libraries in /usr/lib64/ instead of /usr/lib/ (64bit CentOS 5.x for
example).
