screenlets-dev team mailing list archive

Past, present and future

Hi everybody!

I'd like to officially announce that, not lastly due to the currently
abandoned state of the screenlets project, I decided to rejoin the team
and get back into screenlets development. I'd also like to propose this
list to become the new public communication channel for the screenlets
dev team.

I also have to apologize for the inconveniences and frustration within
the project that happened throughout the last year. I should have stayed
more informed about what's going on and maybe should have intervented at
a certain point.

Anyway, during a short conversation with Natan Yellin from the
universal-applets project I got a quick summary of the events that lead
to the current "fork-situation". Without making big promises, I'll just
say that chances are still good to get things back up and running. Of
course, we need to have some deeper talk concerning the future plans and
so on, but we seem to share the same goals - which should make it easier
to work together.

After looking through code, revisions and bugs during the last days, I
can see that there has a lot of improvement been made. Many things (e.g.
support for other widget engines) are great and useful additions and I'd
really like to thank all people who took part in that development and
kept the project alive. There is already a whole lot of functionality in
place. I can't see many other widget frameworks that offer such great
power and flexibility (at least among those who are not sponsored by
mobile phone companies ;-) ...).

>From what I can see, the major hurdle we have to face is if (and how) we
try get the screenlets and the U-A into one project again. I have a
first idea on this, but I'll comment on that in a later post under a
different topic. I am sure Natan spent some time thinking about this,
too and has his own proposal. Since this may require a bit of diplomacy
we shouldn't rush into it for now.

I'll post some ideas and proposals later today. So, in case anyone
except Natan and myself will ever read a mail sent to this list, feel
free to leave a comment. If you are a developer and want to join the
screenlets-dev team it is also a good start to introduce yourself to the
list first. Thanks for your time!

best regards
